Rhode Island/New Port Mansions & Gillette Castle/Dinosaur Park!

Well We started the day off with a litlle fishing today and frog hunting with Kaylee! I cought a nice bass and Kaylee caught a few nice frogs.  After getting cleaned up we met Bob & Nancy for a good breakfast at a place called "The Shack."  After breakfast we all headed over to Rhode Island to see the Newport mansions.  This little find was a must see for anyone visiting the New England area.  Karen took a tour of a mansion called the Breakers with Nancy and Bob & I took the kids to a place called the cliff walk.  This is a nice 3 mile walk along the cliffs by the ocean behind some of the mansions. The kids really enjoyed this, because there were spots that you could climb down to the ocean level and dip your feet in the water.  This area is one Karen and I marked off as a must see on a return trip.  There are several of these places that we just didn't have time to stay as long as we wanted.  We could have spent 3-4 days walking throughout the shops, mansions and nice restaraunts in the area.  After the mansions and cliff walk we went into town and found a really great hole in the wall called Flo's Clam Shack.  We ate clam strips and clam cakes and even clam chowder!  Of course the kids had the standard issue hot dog and hamburger.

The next day we went to see the Gillette Castle.  This castle was built by William Gillette, the famous actor who played Sherlock Holmes!  It was an interesting castle, built on the Connecticut river, with some very interesting features.  The castle was built of mostly stone and wood and had hidden doors, so he could navigate through the castle while guests were there, but he would not be seen. He even had his own 1/4 scale railroad track and cars that went around the property to the tune of 3 miles.   The castle was just the right size for the kids and I and Karen really enjoyed it also.  From here we traveled to meet up with Bob & Nancy at Dinosaur State Park.  There is an interesting story about this park in which the fossilized tracks were found by accident during construction and the construction was halted.  They built a dome over the area to preserve it.  I posted a picture of the details for you to read.  The kids had a blast looking at the dinosaur tracks and there was a movie talking all about how the dinosaurs lived and even some panning for gems and fossils.  After all this, we headed to Cabelas to look at the fishing stuff and let the kids see all the stuffed animals.  A couple of hundred dollars later we left the store with a new fishing pole, Hats, some fishing lures and Karen even found a thing or two to buy. Running out of time and money, we went to Bob and Nancy's for a farewell dinner of locally made hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill!  We really enjoyed our time spent with Nancy & Bob! They were so good to us and our kids and we would really enjoy coming back to visit with them again!  Nova Scotia... Nancy and Bob?????
